Double Denim

Double Denim

Double Denim or Denim on Denim is a massive trend for this Spring/Summer season, but with it being a fashion faux paus for so long, many are asking just how to do it? There are a few tricks to pulling off they key trend, without looking dated or like you just happened to be in a Levi’s store when your pay cheque came in.

Following a few key style tips and outfit building ideas, you needn’t fear mixing and matching your denims anymore.

1)  It doesn’t all have to be one shade – don’t be scared to mix your lights with your darks. Wearing a darker colour jean, with a lighter shade on top will make your bottom half appear slimmer.

2) Denim means more than jeans, try mixing it up and putting a denim skirt, dress or dungarees with your favourite chambray shirt instead.

3) Accessories your denim on denim with a pop of colour. Layer up, pop a bright slogan t-shirt under your denim jacket. Alternatively team with a bright bag or pair of shoes.

4) Keep it simple for an everyday summer look. Style your favourite high waisted jeans with a cropped denim cami and a pair of sliders - two trends in one look. Very chic!

5) Dress it up! Many mistake this trend with being casual only, but it doesn’t have to be. Try styling a light coloured chambray shirt tucked into a darker denim pencil skirt, paired with your favourite stilettos. This creates a much more structured silhouette for a formal occasion.

The great thing about this trend is everyone already has the essentials in their wardrobe to pull it off.  Everybody has at least one pair of jeans and I’ll bet if you dig deep enough a denim jacket or shirt in there too. So why not put your staples together and give Double Denim a second chance?

The 'Cinderella' Waist

 The Cinderella Waist

With the hugely anticipated release of the latest Cinderella movie, comes a triumph over actress Lily James teeny tiny waist. Disney denies any form of digital editing accusations. Of course its' clear for anyone to see the prominent size of the bottom half of the dress and accentuated shoulders provide some sort of optical illusion making the waist seem much smaller than it actually is , alongside the extremely uncomfortable and restricting corset James is wearing. It seems the movie has set off a trend, everyone who's everyone seems to be using waist trainers and corsets to create a silhouette of tiny waist and larger bottom half, essentially the perfect hour glass figure. For those of you with petite, boy-ish type figures like myself, this is easier said than done. However using a high-waisted midi skirt teamed with a crop top or slogan T-shirt tucked in and a pair of stilettos or even trainers for a more casual look, can create the same effect. A few of my favourites are the Grid Print Bonded Midi Skirt from Topshop at £55.00 and the ASOS Golden Jacquard Skirt which comes as a Co-ordinating set in yellow, perfect for Spring.

Victoria Beckham Dover Street Store – Review

In the past decade Victoria Beckham has established herself as a world renowned fashion designer and style icon, sure it’s taken a while to find her forte; we’ve all heard the painful solo records, we’ve seen the awkward acting and we’ve read the monotonous books but her new Dover Street Store along with current Spring/Summer collection proves it was worth the wait.

There’s nothing worse than these collections put together by in house design teams and then some talentless reality TV star comes along and puts their name on it and claims to be a fashion designer. No, you’re an endorsement. That is certainly not the case when it comes to the Victoria Beckham brand, her pieces are strategically put together based on her own personal style of classic, subtle tailoring.

On arriving at the Dover street store it is initially a little intimidating, the floor to ceiling slate grey door remains closed and gives the uninviting impression that you need to book an appointment!

Once inside you immediately get the feeling you are in a museum rather than a store, the high ceilings, concrete staircase which in its self seems like a work of art, dark wooden interiors along with the perfectly placed handbags and accessories on white shelves, it’s clear to see the architect chosen was purposefully not familiar with retail spaces.

The décor is a direct reflection of her design philosophy, minimalist, effortless and contemporary. Spread across three floors the garments are perfectly spaced starting with the more affordable items (£500-£600) leading to the more expensive attire of well over a thousand pound.

The fitting rooms are enormous, not like your fast fashion high street cubicles that are hell-bent on making you feel that claustrophobic you need to get out but more like you could happily live in there!

Not only does it look amazing, sleek and sophisticated it also smells it too! With
Diptyque’s Feu de Bois candles lining the staircase. The staff all look like they’ve stepped off the runway in black blazer and cigarettes trouser combo’s and are as friendly as they are good looking. Every last detail down to the tills being hand held tablets successfully make VB’s store every bit as modern and glamorous as you would imagine it to be.

Unusually in comparison to other high end designers every single item would be something you would purchase, rather than the sometimes outrageous garments designed to make some form of statement, every piece was simply beautiful and practical. Featuring lots of monochrome with the bursts of orange the clothes are very ’her’. In terms of style, quality and construction it certainly is the best spring/summer collection I have seen so far this year.

The Camel Coat

The Camel Coat

The camel coat is a must have in these bitter months leading up to Spring, when it's too cold for a jacket but not quite cold enough for your woollies! Your outerwear becomes an essential part of every outfit so it's important to find the right one, that works as a casual everyday look and you can also dress up for those chilly nights too.

The camel coat is a timeless classic, they are ridiculously versatile - whether teamed with a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and trainers or draped over the shoulders with your favourite little black dress and stilettos - it always looks just as sophisticated.

A softer alternative to black yet still matches with everything plus the sumptuous colour compliments almost every skin tone.

The best part is they are all over the high street so you don't have to pay the designer price tag to get the look. I opted for the Topshop Slim Pocket Detail Camel Coat £58, some of my other favourites are the ASOS Relaxed Oversized Coat was £90 now in the sale for £40 and the Pretty Little Thing Hope Camel Boyfriend Coat for £40.

'The UGLY Shoe'

Ugly shoes are back, the bigger and bulkier the better! This time last year Adidas Stan Smiths made a come back being worn by designers such as Marc Jacobs amongst every celebrity and fashion blogger going - they became a fashion classic. But now they take a back seat to the chunky shell-toed 90's favourite Superstars. Literally these were my playing out shoes back in the day! And now they're gracing the feet of anybody who's anybody - Jay z, Kate Moss, Caroline Flack, Rita Ora to name a few!

In my opinion the first thing you need to know about fashion this season are the colours black and white. So naturally I went for the all white. The black striped were also a big contender. Teamed with ripped skinny jeans they become the ultimate casual statement shoe of the moment. Or alternatively pair with a matching blazer and cigarette trouser combo for the perfect smart-lux style.

The Adidas Superstar doesn't just look good either they are also extremely comfortable. Available in most shoe stores such as JD, Office, Footasylum for £64.99 or if your lucky enough to fit into the junior section like me £40.00 - bargain!
